Weird Plenty of Fish Case Study
By on Sep 02, 2010

Have you ever been rejected by a member of the opposite sex because of your height? You don’t need to answer that. Plenty of Fish Ads will tell me how common it is.

I had a bit of downtime yesterday, so I searched through ads.pof.com. I’m always a fan of trying something out from left field, so I tried creating a campaign targeting British lads who love a pint or two each week (you can target drinkers on POF). I found a great Clickbank.com e-book, based around how to make money from beer drinking (I’m not exactly sure how it works). All excited, I uploaded that campaign to POF. Then Ben, from POF, kindly let me know that I couldn’t promote drinking, and so that failed.

So then I changed tact, and saw that you can target people’s heights. I searched around on Clickbank, and found an e-book about how to make you grow taller (I’m not exactly sure how that works either). I created some ads, uploaded them to POF, and yay, they got approved!

So here are my creatives:

I chose 728×90 ads because not many people seem to bother with them, so they are cheap (hint). I also targeted the UK for the same reason (hint). I focused on just a few small split tests:

  • Which text worked better, blue or red?
  • How much of a difference does rewording the same idea make?
  • Can plain text compete with images and animations?

Those questions will be answered soon! But first, I want to know YOUR thoughts!

I will post results tomorrow. Think ya got marketing sussed? Take you pick up above!

  1. Hmm the Blue Tall seems to reach to emotions a bit more but the animated gif has more of a call to action. Can hardly wait to see the results.

  2. browie says:

I'm going with the animation. But my 2nd guess is the 2nd ad because it tapers off and has the classic blue hyperlink

My gut feeling tells me the animated image and after voting, it seems most people feel the same way.

animated. where did you get that picture?

  5. tom says:

I used to date a taller girl actually. Not a fan of it haha. Wondering how this is going to perform. Thanks for the study Mr Green

I think blinking got highest ctr but 1st ad does best in terms of sales.

Lorenzo, can you briefly explain how to create a blinking ad? Is it just an animated gif with different color borders basically?

  7. Affiliit says:

I'd say the TALL Enough one in Red. The animated one tends to draw my eyes to the couple which doesn't seem as relevant as some may think.

Definitely curious to see the results! :)

What was your demographic targeting for this?

  10. I once tried to promote that grow taller ebook on Friendster. Simply because they had cheap Malaysian and Singapore traffic.

Noticed u used a short Asian in your image – I think we had similar targetting ideas.

I haven't checked the results yet, but I'd say if you targetted this to Asians, the last ad would win. But if you're targetting everyone, guys wouldn't identify with the image. So I'd go for the first one.

    now to see the result..

  11. Cerron says:

Where did you get those images from?

  12. So much for ad's without images not working…

Also until you reach $1000 spend you can't use that banner size can you?

Just one more thing, How long do you test ad's before ditching them and do you use Pof tracking or another?

  13. I am SHORT and PROUD baby! hahahaha

    Daniel

  14. I'm going with "Because your weren't tall enough RED" and the STATIC image.

  16. I would say 'Tall Enough Red'!
