The Wishing Well Secret (A Fairy Tale for Affiliates)

affiliate marketing fairytale

Once upon a time there were three women and a magical wishing well that promised to grant whatever your heart desired. Obviously curious, the first woman walked up to well and wished “I want to be rich.” Suddenly a bag of gold coins appeared. The woman was happy. The second woman walked up to the well and wished “I want to clear my debt.” ZING! A bag of gold coins appeared. The woman was happy. The third woman ran up to the well and wished “I want to make my husband happy.” CHA CHING! A bag of gold coins appeared again. The woman was happy.

What does this have to do with anything you care about?

Well it’s a bit far-fetched but my point is that everyone was given the same thing but all had different reasons for wanting it. This applies very much to affiliate marketing and the importance of using different angles to promote a single offer.

I’m sure all of you have come across an offer because that you’ve heard was “killing it”. You knew the traffic source so you tried running it using the most default angle. It was a big flop. You scratched your head and wondered why you couldn’t make it work.

I haven’t had one large campaign by using a default angle.  All my big hitting campaigns have come from using an unique angle.

Example time!

Lets looking at dating – SinglesNet: Female LP (25+).

  • “Looking for a Date?” (image of provocative female) “Find 1000s of hot singles in your area.”
This is the default wish: I want a date.
  • “Need Company?” (image of a more conservative female) “Fix up that hole in your heart.”
Wish: I don’t want to be alone.
  • “Searching for Marriage?” (image of a bride) “Get those wedding bells ringing in no time.”
    Wish: I want a wife.
  • “Want to Start a Family?” (image of a family) – “Make your own little family.”
Wish: I want a wife and kids.

Now you can flip those angles again. Pitch from a male perspective.

  • “I Found The Hottest Date” (image of provocative female around a males arm) “Get your hot date here! It worked for me.”
  • “I Have The Most Beautiful Wife” (image of a newly wed couple) “I found my wife within 2 weeks of signing up.”

You get the idea. The product is the same in the end, but there are a tonne of angles to market it.

Alright you twisted my arm! One more example and that’s it. You’re getting into my money zone now.

Example 2: E-Cigarette.

Disclaimer: To smokers please do not read this if you are fainthearted, just scroll down to the happy ending.

  • “Quit Smoking Now.” (Image of a smoker or disgusting lung) “Quit smoking fast and easy.”
Default wish: I want to quit smoking.
  • “Don’t kill your loved ones.” (Image of a family around smoke) “Over 100,000 people die of second hand smoking a year. Don’t increase that statistic.”
Wish: I want to protect my family.
  • “I Finally Quit Smoking.” ( Image of happy person) “I’ve tried so many products, but only one worked.”
Wish: I want to be like him.
  • “Men Who Smoke Aren’t Sexy.” (Picture of provocative woman) “7/10 women dislike men smoking. Increase your chances of getting a date, quit smoking.”
Wish: I want to be liked by women.
  • “You Might Look Like This if You Keep Smoking.” (Image of man with extreme wrinkles, yellow skin and bad teeth) “Smoking give you wrinkles, yellow skin and bad teeth. Still think it’s cool?”
Wish: I want to look good.

So there you have it folks.

Now take a look at your wishing well. How many wishes can you make come true? Keep coming up with unique angles and you will live happily ever after.

Always a good read. I have a few questions though.

When you run these variations do you run them all at the same time?

Also, any recommendation on test budget size?

Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Mr. Green!

    • Lorenzo Green says:

      Hi Jay,

If you're asking if I run all these variations during testing, the answer is no. I'm a big fan of the king of the ring technique. Have two angles fight it out, the best converting stays on and split tests against a new angle.

If you are asking if I run the variations after testing, it would only be because I split up a broad demographic. For example if the offer was dating targeted towards men 18-25. I would try find niches within that demo e.g Christians, recently single etc. Then I would use the angle worked best for that smaller demo.

Budget size depends on the payout. If the payout is $1 I would want to spend $3 to test.

Lorenzo, I really like the lead in to this post. Really helps visualize the matter better. I try to help many pubs with this type of approach; the default always proves the worst. Keep the posts coming! Like Shawn says..its like you never run out of good tips.

  8. Wallace says:

nice post, you mean we actually have to think of different ways to market something to be successful?!?

    • Lorenzo Green says:

Not at all. You can think of the most default way to market something and be successful.

This post is more so for people who aren't getting that one way to work. Or have old campaigns that were working and need a new spark it keep it in the green. It's also useful for scaling out to more traffic source.

  9. Steve says:

Damn man, one of those examples is very close to my moneyzone too, noobs take note this post is gold!

"imagine your audience" – don't just think what keyword or website will lead to a conversion but think what type of person will convert.

  10. Casey says:

    LMFAO @ Pedobear.

  11. Feldo says:

This makes so much sense! Thanks for the helpful tip Lorenzo. I will be thinking in terms that there are so many different angles on what a person wants, needs and wishes. I'm going to just play around with some of my own angles and really think of the thoughts that a customer is going through. Thanks man!
