Plenty of Fish – Creepy Case Study

plenty-of-fish-case-study

Last week I had a little skim through the ole twitter…

I saw this tweet:

eyes call to action

“Interesting” I said. I had to test this for myself!

Note: I am not trying to call Jason out, I just thought it would be a fun test to try out.

I decided to solely focus on Plenty of Fish Ads and CTRs, (click-through-rates) since that would be the easiest thing for me to test, then I added a bit of spice :D .

Firstly I created two simple ad variations of women looking into the camera as seen below (thank you to Polarbacon at the stackthemoney forums for the 7000 dating images pack!).

Exhibit A.1 and B.1 –

(eyes looking at camera)

I then opened Photoshop and created another two ads. I tweaked the women’s eyes to focus on the call to action button.

Exhibit A.2 and B.2

Mr Green didn’t stop there though!

What if we split tested their eyes? One eye looks at the call to action, one eye looks at you. You could get the best of both worlds!

Exhibit A.3 and B.3

(one eye looking at camera, one eye looking at call to action)

The next two ads I created, I really had no reason to make other than seeing if guys dug chicks with cross eyes.

Exhibit A.4 and B.4

(crossed eyes)

plenty-of-fish-ads2I will post the results of this case study soon.

But firstly I’d love to get your thoughts on which creative you think would preform the best CTR wise?

Do you think the more normal looking ads will rock it?

Do you think the whacko girls will get the guys?

Vote below!

Please do tell why you voted a specific creative, I’m curious.

As much as I dig the cross eyed girls I think the call to action will convert better.

  2. d3so says:

This literally made me lol! I think A2 had a higher CTR.

  3. Brennen says:

Whoa that IS Creepy HAH. I vote on cross eyes just for the "eye catching" factor, so to speak.

  4. Justus says:

Simply awesome! I think A2 is the winner here, but if you are going for cross-eyed girls clicking your ad, maybe it's A/B.4 – maybe they can just identify better with the person they see in the ad.
Think about a dating network only for cross-eyed people – make it all screenreader accessible and you're golden! You created a market right there!

I like the way you think! Lets JV, and do PlentyofXEyes.com.

I'm thinking the website would be split in half. However the left side of the website will be on the right, and the right side of the website will be on the left. Being crossed eyed should switch them back to their rightful positions…just brainstorming here.

    lol DERP faces

  6. NetB says:

B2, because of smaxor's tweet and because it shows a little cleavage. The girl in A2 is hotter though.

  7. I think B3 is the winner, lol :)

  8. Colten says:

    What NetB said. B2 ftw!

  9. Lavish says:

LOL @ this case study. Friggin' awesome.

  10. I will say A3 just because it just looks……..don't know just chose it

  11. ClueList says:

Cross-eyed women, cause even the not-so-cool guys stand a chance.

Really out of the box stuff that's nice to see in a case-study. Never did much to a picture aside from tinting or messing with backgrounds. Maybe some lipstick, pretty hats & eyebrow shaving on pictures is in order!

    • mrgreenam says:

Haha yes yes! I can also see something like changing one woman's hair color, ginger, brunette, black, blonde, red.

Pro tip: add a chick with a baby arm pointing to the CTA for insane CTR – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRxwUAG1SdQ

  13. This case study offends me.

  14. NathanT says:

I love the cross eyed photos. Hilarious! Mr Green , you make affiliate marketing so much fun.

  15. NathanT says:

I think B2 – a bit of cleavage never goes astray and looking at the call to action without looking too goofy sounds like a great idea

  16. Maynzie says:

Dude I have no idea what goes through your brain?

Is it just a world of rainbows, unicorns, chocolate rivers and candy canes?

You are so creative it blows my mind LOL

  17. Jax says:

that's some interesting shit, call to action A2 for sure, really keen to see the CTR results.

  18. looks like i'm with the crowd (which means i'm probably wrong) and going with A2.. The amount of white showing in her eyes makes the photo stand out but still believable and relevant.

  19. Hannah McIntyre says:

I went with A1 because I'm tired and thought we were going for the one with the best conversion rate and not CTR. My real answer would be B4 for best CTR.

  20. LoL! this is just too funny. Thanks for sharing this info!

  21. Dino Vedo says:

Who cares about ctr its all about epc's.

  22. Earl Grey says:

I really do hope its a4 or b4
will be so good for the lulz

  23. jmack1959 says:

Enlarge the breasteses & make her blonde….

  24. Joseph says:

Hahahah Exhibit A.3 just made me crack up for the day, thank!

  25. Smaxor says:

It's funny I talk with affiliates and merchants all day long. And the unsuccessful ones usually say things like

    "I've tried everything"

Well look at this one little thing that can make a difference. Doesn't mean it always will or the looking at the button will always be right. Just means there's 5-6 different varations of just eye placement you could test.

I've tested so many different things and you'd be shocked I've seen 100% improvements and going from break even to insanely profitable with the smallest little changes.

You only fail if you give up.

  31. I voted for the crossed eyes A. lol When will you post the result of this case study? I'm interested to know which one is effective. :)
